渗透美育 For many months after a cancer operation, Linda Pitcher couldn't leave the house. She had to overcome not only cancer, but also mental pain after the operation, which removed a large part of her nose. "Then I've got to walk into my new life and see people," she says. "I was so nervous."
Aching for a way out of social nervousness and worry, Pitcher received psychological therapy (心理治疗). "What do you miss?" her therapist asked. "Drawing," Pitcher replied. She worked hard at school but still got bad grades, which upset her. However, she had always been attracted to mark-making. Now, she realizes that drawing is her way of talking.
At 58, encouraged by her therapist, she studied for a degree in modern design crafts at Hereford College of Arts. She was going to become a printer at first. Instead, there was something special about ceramics (制陶艺术). "I could see a path ahead which I never thought I would get on. And I got a degree! I had never thought about this," she shares.
She loves ceramics. "It's about having resilience (复原力). If things go wrong when you're throwing pots, you can re-throw them to make sure the pots won't crack under stress. It's like me," she says. "You keep going exactly the same every day. You lift your head up and go." Her focus is on drawing on ceramics in a way that people can see the drawing, but the ceramics themselves can have color too.
Pitcher still struggles sometimes, but some things have changed. She used to avoid answering the door. Now, she is taking part in her first art show, where she will look visitors in the eye. "Though nervous, I'm going," she says. "When strangers stop for my works to chat, they give their stories and attract attention. I'm no longer the focus. Now, when I talk, I look at people and I forget I'm doing it. Ceramics has given me back my life."
