A(2024·北京丰台期末)
It was on my 14th birthday that my mother told me to join a volunteer service. Mum was happy, but for me, it was going to be a journey full of uncertainty.
I remember the day I first went to a community food bank. I was nervous, holding a box of canned food, not sure if I was doing it right. Everyone was busy and I felt like I was over my head. But I remembered my mum always said, “Jack, jump in with both feet,” so that was what I did.
The first few weeks were difficult. I had to learn how to sort donations(捐赠品), put food boxes, and most challenging, talk to the people who needed our help. Sometimes, I wanted to give up. But then I'd see the happiness in someone's eyes when they received a box of food and I knew I had to keep going.
One day, I met Ms Jenkins, a sweet old lady who came every week. She taught me how to make the best chocolate chip cookies and we'd chat when I worked. She became like a grandma to me and her stories made me realize(意识到) that everyone had a story worth hearing.
The real test came when we had to organize a big dinner for the community. I was in charge of(负责) decoration, which was way out of my comfort zone. But I asked my friends and together, we turned the hall into a beautiful place. Seeing the smiles on people's faces as they enjoyed the meal we prepared was the best feeling ever.
Volunteering has taught me that growing up isn't just about getting taller or having a driver's license. It's about stepping up, even when you're afraid. It's about finding your voice and using it to make a difference. And I can't wait to see where this journey will take me next.
