Blue whales love to sing. They sing to communicate across long distances. People can hear certain parts of a whale song,so scientists use special tools to record and study the songs. Over the years, they've noticed that the songs have changed in pitch. Pitch describes how high or low a sound is.
Emma Leroy and a team of scientists now think they know why. They've studied more than a million songs from five groups of whales. The songs were recorded in the southern Indian Ocean over a period of seven years. Last fall, the team's report came out in the magazine Oceans. It tells why the pitch of whale songs has gotten lower:whales aren't singing as loudly as they used to.
▲ Leroy's study puts forward two hypotheses(假说). The first is that there are more whales. Starting in 1985,the International Whaling Organization made rules against catching whales. As the whale population has increased, whales have begun to live closer together. And if the whales are closer together, they don't have to sing loudly to communicate.
$The study's second hypothesis is that the pitch of whale songs has dropped because of the weather change. An increase of carbon dioxide(CO_2) has made ocean water more acidic($酸性的$),changing its sound carrying result. Now the songs can be heard from farther away,so the whales don't have to sing loudly. "The increase of CO_2 is good news for whale communication," Leroy says. "But for the environment,it is not good at all." More acidic water could be harmful to some ocean life.$
Leroy says that checking either hypothesis would need more research. "We would need to understand how the blue whales sing the song," she says. But that would mean studying each single whale. It's hard to do and also very expensive. Scientists will continue to study whale songs and each study adds to people's understanding. "Maybe our hypotheses will be checked in 10 years," Leroy says. "Science is often a journey."

根据第四段的内容,“An increase of carbon dioxide($CO_2$) has made ocean water more acidic($酸性的$),changing its sound carrying result.”,可以推断出“it”指的是“二氧化碳的增加”。
根据文章第四段的内容,“An increase of carbon dioxide($CO_2$) has made ocean water more acidic($酸性的$),changing its sound carrying result. Now the songs can be heard from farther away,so the whales don't have to sing loudly.”,可以推断出气候变化影响了鲸鱼歌声传播的距离。
