A new BBC cartoon series called Nikhil and Jay takes you into the life of a family. The main characters are brothers — seven - year - old Nikhil and five - year - old Jay. Their dad is from the north of England and their mum is from the south of India. She speaks Tamil and the children use the Tamil words Amma(mum)and Appa(dad)when talking to their parents.
The show is based on Chitra Soundar's book, and she also wrote many of the scripts. She says that Nikhil and Jay deal with situations in very different ways. Nikhil likes to plan and wants to figure out how to do something before diving in, while Jay "has already imagined how amazing it's going to be and then he's jumped into it already".
In their spare time, Nikhil likes to draw maps, showing his love for order. Jay is more interested in playing with toys and copying the actions of superheroes, full of energy.
In each episode, Nikhil and Jay try out a new activity, such as camping and butterfly watching, with lots of laughs along the way. "The books did have some comedy in them, but we wanted this to be a comedy from the start," says Soundar.
Sai Ganesh Nadesan, who voices Jay, says that his character is "always up to play tricks on his brother". He also thinks viewers will enjoy seeing "all the different foods, music and festivals".
