When asking for money, teens usually spend money on eating and having fun. But the boy Garland Benson raised money to help his big sister, Christiane.
Christiane is almost completely blind, which is a result of Batten disease. She was found to suffer from the rare and fatal(致命的) disease when she was 5. Since then, Christiane's parents, Charlotte and Craig, have started the Beyond Batten Disease Foundation to fund research projects. The lead program discovered a treatment, which they believe could slow down the progress of the disease — and keep their daughter alive longer.
That's when they decided to raise 6 million in two years to get that treatment in front of the FDA(食品及药物管理局). Their son Garland, a boy in his early teens, offered to raise 1 million by himself.
"My plan was to get 100,000 people to give 10 each." He made a video with Sam Ehlinger, who helped by sharing it on social media. Garland also spoke about his sister's rare condition at schools and held lemonade stands, garage sales and fun runs.
On New Year's Eve of 2019, Garland received one last donation and met his goal. His parents say they are very proud, but also very relieved. "It was a lot of pressure to put on a teen set of skinny shoulders," Craig says. "We are very proud of his determination(决心) — staying in there, and not changing, and not giving up on the goal — and doing what it took to get it done."
Garland's final donation actually topped up the 6 million goal. Garland says he's happy he is able to help his sister and other kids get closer to receiving the medicine they need. "She's really nice to me," Garland says of Christiane. "If she was in my situation, she would do the same for me."
1. Why did Garland Benson want to raise 1 million?
A. To pay for his sister's schooling.
B. To help his sister fight her disease.
C. To collect money for his daily fun.
D. To do research on a deadly disease.
2. What can we know about Garland Benson's plan to raise money?
A. It has finally succeeded.
B. It is only school - based.
C. It helps slow the progress of Batten disease.
D. It is designed for all people with Batten disease.
3. Which of the following best describes Christiane?
A. Creative but shy.
B. Clever and confident.
C. Unlucky but positive.
D. Active and hard - working.
4. Which can be a suitable title for the text?

Parenting styles have changed over the years due to the rapid changes in the world. Whether it is tapping technology or applying the best parenting practices to meet their needs, parents nowadays often invest(投入) more time in finding out how best to raise their children.
Modern parents often look to the Internet and social media for parenting advice. These resources have helped modern parents engage(参与) more in their children's development, whether it is their studies or feelings. Modern parents are also more eager to find out useful approaches to helping them raise confident children.
A modern parenting style is helicopter(直升机) parenting, where parents are much too focused on their children. They help children with tasks they can do on their own, like selecting activities and friends for them, or calling their teachers about homework matters. Such a parenting style can hold back the development of the children's ability to handle responsibilities by themselves. Children might be short of life skills such as doing the laundry, clearing their plates or dealing with their schoolwork. Always protecting children from failures may also prevent them gaining skills like problem - solving.
On the other hand, parents in the past tended to control less. Children were given more control over how to manage their schoolwork and choose their friends. They were often expected to shoulder the responsibilities of caring for younger brothers and sisters and managing housework. Living in the pre - Internet age, parents knew little about different parenting methods, and their parenting styles were guided more by their characters, common sense and friendly advice from the family and neighbors, rather than by social media influences or parenting websites.
There is no one right way to raise a child. Each child is unique and should be raised differently by parents who are present but not wandering, who are supportive but not controlling, and who protect but not care too much.
5. What does the underlined word "tapping" mean in paragraph 1?
A. Introducing.
B. Using.
C. Creating.
D. Developing.
6. What is the character of helicopter parenting?
A. Parents make kids popular.
B. Parents provide little money for kids.
C. Parents ask kids to care for themselves.
D. Parents watch over kids' activity too much.
7. What do we know about parents in the past?
A. They ignored their kids' ability.
B. They educated kids in a strict way.
C. They offered kids more space for self - growth.
D. They tended to stay away from social activities.
8. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. How to raise all - round children.
B. How to improve parent - child relationships.
C. How parenting methods have changed over the years.
D. How information technology changes people's lifestyle.
