The fisherman opens his arms and frees the frightened mermaid. She swims down under the water.
Every evening, the fisherman calls the mermaid. To thank the fisherman's help, she sings for him. Her song and her voice are sweet to his ears and his eyes are full of love.

Yuanmingyuan is in Beijing. It covers an area of more than 160,000 square meters. Emperor Kangxi began to build it in 1707 and it wasn't finished until 1809. The Emperors of the Qing Dynasty used Yuanmingyuan for over 150 years. It had three famous gardens: Yuanmingyuan, Changchunyuan and Qichunyuan. People around the world knew about Yuanmingyuan's wonderful gardens, amazing views and interesting buildings. They even called it the "Garden of Gardens".
But in October 1860, British and French soldiers broke into Yuanmingyuan. They took away treasures and started a fire there. In 1900, the Eight-Nation Alliance (八国联军) invaded(侵略) Beijing and greatly destroyed Yuanmingyuan. Since then there were no buildings or beautiful gardens in Yuanmingyuan.
However, even now, Yuanmingyuan is still a popular place to visit. Visitors can walk around the park and learn about its history. Some people believe we should rebuild it. Others think that we should leave the park as it is now. It can remind people of its past.
In 1998, Yuanmingyuan became the Beijing National Defence(国防) Education Base. In 2001, the third Saturday in September was set as China' National Defence Education Day. On this day, it is free to enter Yuanmingyuan. The government hopes that more people will come to Yuanmingyuan and learn about its history.
