What do you want to do when you grow up? More young Chinese people are thinking about flexible employment(灵活就业).
Traditionally, flexible employment includes personal businesses and part - time jobs. But it has taken on new forms in the age of the Internet. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, China already had 200 million flexible workers in 2022. Among them, more than 1.6 million people are working in jobs to do with livestream(直播). According to Alibaba Research Institute’s prediction(预测), the number of new flexible workers in China may reach 400 million by 2036.
“My career(事业) began with flexible employment,” said Liu, a special effects producer(特效师). After completing her study, Liu started sharing her videos about special effects on the Internet. Many watchers liked Liu’s videos. The increase of interest won her a chance(机会) to work for a TV station.
Like Liu, a growing number of young people have been working as vloggers, network anchors, podcast hosts and so on. Some of them take new jobs that are almost unheard of. For example, e - sports training mates help people practise e - sports games; stink guides smell the pickled(腌渍的) bamboo shoots used in luosifen,a popular snack.
“In this new age, young people are provided with chances to follow their own ways of life,” said Gao Yan, a professor from Beijing Normal University. “Doing flexible jobs doesn’t certainly mean that we can’t find a job or that we are not serious about employment,” said Liu. She believes that flexible employment helps people start their own businesses. It helps them make a difference with their own abilities and interests, pointing out a road for their future careers.
