(A: Amy B: Ben)
A: Hi Ben! Have you heard about exploring cultures through cooking? I read about Sasha Martin who cooked meals from 194 countries at home! Let's try this "stovetop adventure" for Culture Day!
B: Wow, cooking to explore the world? But how does food teach culture?
A: It's not just about the food 1
itself
. Our teacher says healthy meals 2
reflect/show
how places and traditions shape our diets. For example, Mediterranean dishes use olive oil for heart health, while the dishes from some 3
Asian
countries such as Japan, Korea or Vietnam balance vegetables and meat to 4
avoid
heavy oils.
B: Oh! Like how mooncakes carry family wishes during Mid - Autumn Festival. Food tells stories! We can 5
spread/introduce
culture to other people just by sharing recipes(食谱)online!
A: Right! Let's cook a foreign dish and explain its cultural roots(根源). Any ideas?
B: How about Thai curry(咖喱)? It uses coconut milk for richness, fresh vegetables for vitamins, and spices like turmeric for health benefits. Tasty and meaningful!
A: Perfect! We'll find a real recipe online. Sasha said proper ingredients matter. Let's 6
compare
it with Chinese hot pot too—both bring people together but use different ingredients.
B: Great! Chinese hot pot uses local meats and vegetables. Thai curry, 7
though/however
, needs tropical(热带的)ingredients like lemongrass.

warms
people in cold winters.
B: And both show family 9
values/togetherness
! Cooking together builds connections.
A: Exactly! Ready to start?
B: 10

Renée Forrestall had no idea what was in store for her. She decided to relearn roller skating in the days leading up to her 60th birthday. The high school art teacher soon bought a new pair of skates, but she thought they were nothing like the 1
ones
she had as a teenager. They were 2
uncomfortable
to wear.
So Forrestall decided to buy a used pair, which were popular among younger skaters, but she was 3
shocked
to learn how much they cost. To find a less - expensive pair, she considered searching in online secondhand shops. A few days later, she 4
received
a notice telling her that a man named James Bond was hoping to sell an old pair of skates for 40. Bond had no idea what size they were, but he posted a picture of them next to a ruler, showing that they were about 25 cm long.
It seemed to be the right size for Forrestall. So she 5
directly
reached out to Bond without waiting. Two days later, she drove to Bond's house and learned that the skates 6
had been sitting/had sat
in his basement for many years. They looked very dirty and yellowed with age; the laces(鞋带)were 7
missing
and the wheels were rock - hard.
But none of that was important when Forrestall tried them on. She slid(滑落)her 8
feet
into them and they fitted like a glove. She was very surprised at how they felt just like the skates that her mother bought for her many years earlier. When pulling off the skates, Forrestall was surprised to see that her name 9
was written
in black marker inside them. She quickly recalled how she used to skate herself for hours on end as a teenager while trying to get better from the "personal loss" she suffered at the time. She always 10
regretted
selling them at a yard sale.
Finally, Forrestall bought the "old" pair of skates and repaired them.
答案: 1.ones 2.uncomfortable 3.shocked 4.received 5.directly 6.had been sitting/had sat 7.missing 8.feet 9.was written 10.regretted
