"When I was 8, a doctor said that I wouldn't live past 20. But now I'm here, at 29, happy with my life," says Ma Jun. He is the youngest winner of the Junma Awards for Ethnic Literature (少数民族文学创作骏马奖)in the prose category (散文类) in November, 2024.

Ma uses a wheelchair (轮椅) because of illness. He was born in 1995 in Ningxia. His winning piece is his first prose collection, Qing Bai Shijie. He wrote it under the pen name Liu Kexing. There are five parts in the book, showing his life experiences: growing up, daily life, love and wish, feelings and reflections (感悟).

*Ma's writing journey began in 2016, the year he did well in gaokao but chose not to go to university (大学). His parents couldn't support their two sons to go to university. So Ma made the decision to stay home, giving his younger brother a chance to go to university. "My brother was still young. I couldn't stand seeing him sad," Ma says.
Luckily, after reading Shi Tiesheng's book Wo Yu Ditan, Ma found a way for his life: writing. He started to think about following Shi's spirit of perseverance (毅力) and creativity: He could do something meaningful (有意义的), like writing, instead of staying in bed letting life pass him by.
He took a three-year journey of writing the book by recording his own life, putting his heart and soul (全心全意地) into the words. And in the end, his book came out successfully.
