Liu Jiakun sits in his Chengdu office, thinking about his latest projects.
For over 40 years, the Pritzker Prize has been given to architects (建筑师) with famous design styles. 1.C But on March 4, 68-year-old Liu Jiakun became China’s second winner. His secret? He designs for everyday people.
Living in Chengdu, Liu has created more than 30 projects. He builds museums and public spaces, but his ideas are special. 2.F He also uses simple, creative solutions to make buildings beautiful and useful.
After the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, Liu invented “reborn bricks” using broken pieces from destroyed houses. 3.A These eco-friendly bricks were later used in his projects, like the Shuijingfang Museum in Chengdu.
