C(2025·辽宁凌源期末)
Researchers say a number of bird species are in danger of dying out due to habitat loss and nesting places’ disappearance.
These birds depend on previous flight paths across countries which frequently fail to protect the spots where birds can rest, recover, and feed. Researchers examined the migration (迁徙) routes of almost 1, 500 bird species, finding that nearly 91% of them passed through dangerous areas.
The primary threat to these migratory birds is the process in which towns grow larger as more people come to live in there. Buildings and pavements have covered the places where birds stop and feed as they move from one part of the world to another. A researcher involved in the study remarked, “Numerous habitats have been lost due to the growth of urban industry, and agriculture.”
Researchers explain that the core problem is that many of these tiny birds die during their migration due to the absence of safe places to eat and rest. Without these stops, they cannot rebuild their energy for the next parts of their trip. Countries in North Africa, Central Asia, and on the East Asian shores are facing the issue of protecting land for birds’ conservation.
The researchers say these countries do not have enough areas that are safe for birds. One species that is extinct now is the Eskimo curlew, with one scientist saying, “With each species we lose, our world becomes a little less rich.”
The researchers emphasise the need for international collaboration to establish safe rest areas for birds that cross national borders. They stress this by pointing out that although one country may establish protected areas for migratory birds, the absence of similar protections in a neighbouring country could result in a bird’s death.
Speaking to *the Los Angeles Times*, one researcher suggests small but meaningful changes, like enlarging the growth of native plants or taking steps to prevent domestic cats from entering bird-populated zones, which could greatly improve the safety and survival rates of these winged travellers.
28. What is the elementary threat to migratory birds?
A. Animal hunters.
B. City development.
C. Lack of water.
D. Natural disasters.
What does the underlined word “collaboration” in Paragraph 6 mean?
A. Partnership.
B. Organisation.
C. Investigation.
D. Movement.
30. What do scientists suggest to protect the migrating birds?
A. Putting up more tall buildings.
B. Introducing more domestic cats.
C. Using more poisons to kill insects.
D. Planting a large number of native plants.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To promote the protection of birds’ habitats.
B. To present solutions to the issue of birds’ habitats.
C. To inform that many bird species are endangered.
D. To find the causes behind the loss of birds’ habitats.

根据第三段中的“The primary threat to these migratory birds is the process in which towns grow larger as more people come to live in there.” 根据画线词下文“They stress this by pointing out that although one country may establish protected areas for migratory birds, the absence of similar protections in a neighbouring country could result in a bird's death.” 故选A。 根据最后一段“Speaking to the Los Angeles Times,... which could greatly improve the safety and survival rates of these winged travellers.” 根据第一段“Researchers say a number of bird species are in danger of dying out due to habitat loss and nesting places' disappearance.”和最后一段“Speaking to the Los Angeles Times,... which could greatly improve the safety and survival rates of these winged travellers.” 故选A。
