“That Tom is going to make a lot of trouble. He kept putting cotton into Martha's sack,” Sambo told Legree that night.
“Then we'll have to teach him a lesson, ” said Legree.
Slowly the tired slaves came into the room for the weighing of the sacks. First Legree weighed Tom's sack, and it was enough. Martha's sack was next. The weight was enough, but Legree shouted at her.
“You lazy animal! This is not enough! Stay here and wait.” He finished weighing all the other sacks, and then turned to Tom. “Come here,” said Legree, “I want to give you a better job than picking cotton, and you can start tonight: take this woman and whip her—you know how.”
“I'm sorry, Master,” said Tom. “I can't do it.”
Legree whipped Tom across his face and then hit him with his fists many times.
“There!” he said. “Now will you tell me you can't do it?”
“Yes, Master,” said Tom, with blood running down his face. “I will work night and day, but I will never whip another person.”
“I bought you, and you're mine, body and soul,” he said, kicking Tom.
“My soul isn't yours, Master! You can't buy it!”
“We'll see,” said Legree. “Sambo, Quimbo, give this dog lesson.”
It was late at night, and Tom lay bleeding alone, among pieces of broken machinery. He heard a noise.
“Who's there? Please, give me some water!”
It was Cassy. She helped him drink and then she cleaned his wounds and put something soft under his head. Tom felt better.
“Now,” said the woman, “that's the best I can do for you. You don't know anything about this plantation. I do. I arrived here five years ago. There's no law here. We are ten miles from any other plantations(种植园). No one will know if Legree burns you alive or cuts you to pieces.”
“Oh, Jesus!” said Tom. “Cassy, you and Emmeline must try and run away. Legree is dangerous for you, and you are both young.”
—Excerpted from Uncle Tom's Cabin

答案:
根据第三段中的“Slowly the tired slaves came into the room for the weighing of the sacks.” 可知,首先称的是汤姆的麻袋,其次是玛莎的麻袋;根据“I will work night and day, but I will never whip another person.” 可知,莱格里踢了汤姆;根据“that's the best I can do for you. You don't know anything about this plantation. I do.”
根据前文“‘I bought you, and you're mine, body and soul,’ he said, kicking Tom.”
根据“Legree whipped Tom across his face and then hit him with his fists many times.”和“I will work night and day, but I will never whip another person.” 故选 A。
