3b 阅读理解
One winter term during college in New York, I took an 8:00 a.m. history class to meet the requirements. It was hard to get up for that class, but 15 of us met 3 times a week to face the cold winds and walk difficultly to that lecture in a classroom.
The professor of the class was a strange fellow. He had red hair, usually looking sleepy, and wore galoshes(胶鞋) with one pant leg in and one out. He was terribly nervous about the class and hardly controlled the lecture looking up through his gold glasses at his students.
I felt that I needed to do something to clear up the boredom that would ensue(因而产生) in his lecture, so I created a little game for myself. For the first time I raised my hand. He was obviously pleased to have a question to answer. In fact, his answers were always interesting.
I continued to do this and found myself actually enjoying the game. The professor seemed to loosen up and some of the other students even joined in from time to time. My little game had saved me from being bored, as it was designed. And I learned quite a bit about ancient world history in addition. The professor clearly knew his material, but had a hard time passing it on to college students in an interesting way. Except for all his strange appearance, he was indeed quite an expert in his field.
On the last day of class we took our books and headed out the door for the last time. As I reached the door, the professor said, “I want to thank you for making my class so interesting.” As he shook my hand happily and smiled for the first time, I was so surprised.
That moment has stayed with me for 30 years. I can’t recall the facts that I learned in his class, but I’ll never forget the professor who taught me a lesson about the power of facts of kindness, on purpose or not.
