It was Julia's 10th birthday. Her mom came to her school to join the fun. The class sang Happy Birthday! After the singing was done, Julia's mom handed out the birthday treat. Every year, Julia's mom brought a great birthday treat to school. She is very good at making sweet cupcakes and delicious cookies. But this year, the treat Julia's mom brought was not so tasty. She brought birthday pencils. Why? Because Julia's school had made a new rule: Parents are not allowed to bring the sweet treat to school parties.
Julia's school is not the only one to ban the sweet treat. Other schools around the country have done the same thing. "Fewer sweets in school," experts said, "will be good for kids' health. About one third of the US kids are overweight. This may lead to serious health problems."
Of course, few kids like this rule. "What's fun about a party if there are no cupcakes?" they asked. And many parents dislike the rule either. "I want my kids to be healthy," said one of the parents. "But it's an important tradition. It makes me sad to know my kids will not be able to enjoy it."
How did Julia's mom feel about this rule? She was sad when she first learned of the rule. But Julia's classmates liked the pencils very much. That made her feel relieved.
