Next to our house there lived an old couple. It seemed that they didn't feel like making any connections with others. The only words we ever heard from them were “Keep out of our rosebushes(蔷薇花丛)!”
The rosebushes served as a fence between our house and theirs. A suitable place was a headache for us when we wanted to play softball (垒球) games. The gym was very far from our home. One day, my sister and I had a game in our yard. My sister was trying to catch a fly ball. She fell over some rosebushes. Just at that moment, the woman Ruby Jones appeared. She shouted angrily, “Look at what you've done to our family's roses!”
Hearing this, my sister and I ran into our house. Breathlessly, we told Mom what had happened. “Girls, I have told you not to play softball near those bushes. Come outside right now and help me fix them,” my mom said. We followed her outside to help repair the rose fence. While Mom was examining the damaged roses, Ruby slowly walked out. She looked sad with her eyes red.
She walked over to my mother. We girls held our breath, waiting to see who would shout first and what terrible things would happen. “We are sorry about the flowers,” said Mom. Ruby smiled through her tears. She said, “The roses are very ▲. They remind me of my mother. She died because of a serious illness several years ago.” Hearing that, I felt a sense of shame. My mother went down to examine the damaged roses and the woman did the same. So did my sister and I.
