In September, 2021, 67-year-old Xu surprised everyone with a decision to join a national silver-age teacher action plan and work as a volunteer teacher at a university in Karamay, Xinjiang.
Over 4,000 km from home, Xu started her new life journey in Xinjiang. In the face of the dry climate, sandy weather and less convenient living conditions here, Xu and other volunteer teachers showed no fear and tried their best to light up the students’ journey of learning. Here is an interview with three volunteer teachers.
Interviewer: What makes you decide to be a volunteer teacher here at your age?
Zhong Dakang: Education is something I love to work on. I’m 63 now. I often forget to take blood-pressure pills because I’m too engrossed (专注) in preparing for my lessons. But I don’t mind that as I love teaching.
Sun Xudong: I’m 64. I arrived here in 2021 as a retired English teacher. I’ve always hoped to improve the local education.
Xu Shuangmin: At first, I came to Karamay with a wish to help more students realize their dreams. But over the past years, I’ve come to realize that I, too, am learning and growing.
The national silver-age teacher action plan was started by the Ministry of Education to improve the educational quality of universities in the western areas. It is useful and meaningful to students and retired teachers like Xu Shuangmin.
