Ⅴ. 阅读理解。
On October 31, 2011, the seven billionth world citizen (公民), a baby girl, was born in a hospital in Philippines (菲律宾).
Maybe you don't know that the world's population didn't hit 1 billion until the 19th century. But only a hundred years later, it reached over 2 billion. In 1971, there were about 3.5 billion people on the earth. 40 years later, the number doubled (翻倍). What's worse, it keeps growing at a surprising speed. If this continues, the world's population will shoot up to 8 billion by the year 2025.
Most of the newly-born people are in developing countries. These countries are mostly in Africa, South America and parts of Asia. In developed countries of Europe and North America, the population is growing very slowly. This is because most women in these countries have only one or two children. In the developing countries, many women have five or more children. In 1950, around one quarter of the world's population lived in the developed countries. By 2050, these countries will be home to only around one tenth of the world's people.
With more and more people coming into this world, in the developing countries people are now being short of food, water and medicine. What's more, farming land is becoming less, so country people are moving to towns and cities in the hope of finding a better life. But the cities can't provide enough housing (住宿), so the newcomers have to live in crowded rooms. Finally, more people lose their jobs, which makes people poorer, especially in poor countries.
To solve these problems, many countries are taking measures to control the population.
