Have you ever heard of Esperanto (世界语)? It is a man - made language for world use.
Esperanto was created by Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof. Zamenhof was born in 1859 in a small town in Poland (波兰). At that time, people living in the town spoke different languages. They often fought with each other. Zamenhof thought if they spoke the same language, they would understand each other better and set up friendship, so he decided to create a new language to remove the hatred (仇恨) among them.
Zamenhof could speak Polish (波兰语), Russian and German when he was young, and later he learned Latin (拉丁语), French, English and Greek (希腊语). He started to study the languages at the age of sixteen. He analyzed (分析) these languages and made the primary structure (结构) of the new language after three years' hard work. It was named Esperanto, which means “one who hopes”. But it was not accepted by other people. His father even burnt all the materials in order to stop him from continuing his study.
Zamenhof published (出版) his book, The First Book, in 1887. In this book, he announced Esperanto. Zamenhof wished Esperanto to be easy to learn and speak. The words are spelled as they are pronounced, and the grammar is simple. But the language is based on word roots in major European languages. The language is taught throughout the world, but it is not widely used by people now. It is estimated (估计) that there are up to several million Esperantists, or Esperanto speakers.
