Entering any bookstore, you will find there are shelves filled with all kinds of English dictionaries, such as Webster’s English Dictionary, The Oxford English Dictionary, Longman English Dictionary and Collins English Dictionary. Some are for beginners and others are for higher level learners. How did dictionaries develop?
With English spreading in all directions, people spelt words slightly differently from each other. Lexicographers wanted to prevent this situation from going worse. They decided to write a dictionary.
Dr. Johnson was one of the greatest. It took him nine years to write the Dictionary of the English Language. It was 18 inches tall and had 42,773 entries(条目). For the first time when people were calling you a pickle - herring, a jobbernowl or a fopdoodle, you knew exactly they were making a fool of you. Because they were listed as standard English in this dictionary.
However, words kept being invented and a new dictionary should be written to take in the new words. A new book called The Oxford English Dictionary was started in 1857. The dictionary was written with hardship(艰难). Its first editor resigned(辞职) to be an archbishop(大主教). The second died of TB(肺结核) and the third was so boring that half his volunteers gave up and one of them ended up in mental(精神的) hospital. It took more than 70 years to finish the dictionary. It didn’t come out until 1928. Ever since, it has continued to be revised(修订) because nobody can stop people from making up new words.
The world is always changing, so are the English dictionaries.
