A research team in Shanghai has made a guide robot for blind people. These people can’t see things. “We believe this robot will work as ‘a pair of eyes’ for the blind,” said Gao Feng, a famous scientist.
There are about 17.3 million blind people in China. However, there are only about 400 guide dogs in service for the blind. It means there is only one guide dog for every 40,000 blind people in China.
The guide robot can correctly know what the blind people say and respond in less than one second. It can walk at a speed of three meters a second and keep walking with little noise. The robot can find the way by itself, and know traffic lights.
“The important work of the robot is to make helpful communication with blind people. We should make the robot understand the user’s purposes and take him or her to walk safely,” said Gao. We connect natural language understanding and force - feedback canes (力反馈手杖) to help users use the robot.”
“We have already got orders for 20 robots and believe that they will soon be ready for the market,” said Gao.
