On January 28, 2025, some colourful robots surprised many people by dancing Yangko—a traditional Chinese folk dance—at China's most famous TV show, the CCTV Spring Festival Gala. Famous director Zhang Yimou worked together with a Chinese robotics company called Unitree (宇树科技) to create this amazing performance.
The robots wore red and white clothes, just like human dancers! They moved their arms elegantly and twirled handkerchiefs in the air. What's more amazing? They never fell during high kicks! Their secret was special "laser eyes" that helped them walk safely on the stage.
Unitree first caught people's attention in 2021 when their robot cows danced for singer Andy Lau. For this show, engineers taught the robots to dance by using AI technology. Strong robot joints also allowed them to perform Yangko moves perfectly.
Everyone enjoyed the show! Young people thought it was "so cool", while older audiences loved the robots' funny expressions. Many people shared videos online, calling it "the best New Year gift". Director Zhang said, "This shows how robots can help keep old traditions alive."
