Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share with you the event “Reading A Book Together”, which was fueled by a shared passion for literature and a desire for connection(定语从句).
During the event, we took turns to discuss the engaging plots and underlying themes of the collectively - chosen book Great Expectations. What I particularly enjoyed (主语从句) was the various perspectives on character analysis, which enabled me to critically appreciate the work(定语从句). Most importantly, the relaxing exchange boosted my confidence in voicing my own insights.
If you were here, you would love it too. (虚拟语气) I hope we have the chance to read a book together in the future(宾语从句). Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

[2025江苏南通二调]My father was a trader who was known for his honesty and wisdom. He was different from all other men in our village. He valued education and I was one of the very few girls who received education though my family wasn’t well off then.
I loved learning new things as a girl and my favourite day of a week was Thursday, for I would sit beside my grandfather who would recite many poems by famous poets. My favourite poet of all was Lord Byron, whose poems made me dive into another world of beauty. I loved the way he chose words that can easily lift me up and make me forget everything around me. I imitated him and started writing poems by myself. I discovered that poetry was not just a pastime but a passion that I could pursue for the rest of my life. With several years’ effort, I had written many poems. Each poem was a reflection of my thoughts and feelings, capturing moments of joy, sorrow, and everything in between.
I found my heart in words and enjoyed writing poems more and more. This creative outlet became an essential part of my identity, allowing me to express myself in ways that I never imagined possible. Poetry was my escape and my solace(慰藉), and I was grateful for the education and support that allowed me to nurture this passion.
One day, while I was helping my grandfather milk the cow, I overheard our neighbours telling my father about a poetry competition, whose winner would get 3,000 pounds. That was good news! At that time my mother became very ill, and the doctor who diagnosed (诊断) her with a serious disease said her condition was growing worse and worse. He suggested that she should have an operation as soon as possible. Unfortunately, our financial state kept deteriorating (恶化); we didn’t have enough money for such an operation. I thought if I won the prize of this poetry competition, I could easily have the money for my mother’s surgery.

答案:
Hearing my ambitious idea, my father expressed full support for it. He believed in my talent and encouraged me to enter the competition with confidence. Together, we spent evenings going over my poems, selecting the best ones and polishing them until they shone. His faith in me fueled my determination, and he even took on extra work to ensure I had everything I needed for the competition(宾语从句,定语从句). The day I submitted my poems, he told me how proud he was of me (宾语从句), reminding me that my words had the power to change our lives(动词 - ing形式作状语).
The big day came—my father and I went to the prize distribution site. The room was filled with anticipation and excitement, with participants eagerly waiting(with复合结构). I felt a mix of nervousness and hope as the announcer began revealing the winners(时间状语从句). Then, as if in a dream, I heard my name being announced as the winner. A wave of disbelief and joy washed over me. My father hugged me tightly, his eyes filled with pride and happiness(独立主格结构). It was a moment I would never forget(定语从句), a recognition of my hard work and a glimmer of hope for my mother’s recovery.
