一、阅读理解
As the most celebrated and well-visited of all the national parks in Tanzania, the Serengeti National Park remains a land of surprises and unexpected discoveries. The credit for such wide praise must go to the Kenyans for so strongly promoting their own tiny corner of it. The public respect it receives from nearly every wildlife filmmaker, the tourists and the Tanzanians themselves has also ensured an approach to protecting this attractive land as close to a natural state as possible.
Covering nearly 15,000 square kilometers of impressive Tanzanian land, the Serengeti provides an exceptional landscape for wildlife viewing. This land is famous for its huge concentrations of wildlife, especially the big cats. It’s also the appealing ground of the Great Migration(大迁徙); a huge group of over 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras and 350,000 gazelles stretch their legs over 1,200 miles in an annual race to find enough water and green grass for survival.
During the months of the Great Migration, what can be seen is wildebeest after wildebeest. The migrating wildebeest follow a general pattern of movement and behaviour through the months of the year, but the exact speed and location of the migration are as changeable as the weather. They move following the rainfall, or the promise of it. Migrating animals cannot be relied upon to be in any one place at a set time, and thus holiday plans cannot always be made to meet them just right.
A sign hangs at an entrance gate to the Serengeti claiming “This is the world as it was in the beginning.”. While it is hard not to romanticize the likelihood of this claim when you are alone among its big ancient stones, this large area of land has had its fair share of history. More than 300 years ago, the Maasai people lived here and created their homes from the wood.
The Maasai people prove that living in harmony with the natural order can allow of coexistence with wildlife. Protecting the Serengeti’s natural environment is essential to maintaining its beauty and variety, and ensuring that future generations will be able to enjoy it as it is today.
