Once upon a time, there were two very famous men named Zhuge Liang and Zhou Yu. The people of China have been telling their story for a very long time.
One day, Zhou Yu asked Zhuge Liang to make 100,000 arrows(箭)for him. Zhuge Liang confidently replied, “No problem! I'll bring you 100,000 arrows in just three days.”
To keep his promise(诺言), Zhuge Liang had a clever plan. He asked his soldiers(士兵)to fill twenty big boats with lots of straw men. On the third day, very early in the morning, they made the boats go towards the camps of Cao Cao's soldiers, which were on the other side of the river.
When they reached the camps, Zhuge Liang's soldiers started shouting loudly and playing their drums(鼓). Cao Cao's soldiers heard the noise and thought they were under attack(攻击). But they couldn't see clearly who were attacking them because of the thick fog on the river.
Not wanting to take any chances, Cao Cao asked his soldiers to shoot arrows at the sounds of the shouts and drums. The arrows started hitting the straw men on Zhuge Liang's boats. Very soon, the boats were filled with arrows.
After that, Zhuge Liang's soldiers turned the boats around and shouted back, “Thank you for your arrows, Cao Cao!” Zhuge Liang successfully collected more than 100,000 arrows. He then took all the arrows and gave them to Zhou Yu, showing that he could keep his promise.
