One day, Zhang Liang noticed an old man sitting on a bridge. He watched as the old man threw his shoe away.
“Hey, you go and get my shoe! Then put it on my foot!” the old man shouted at Zhang Liang. “How rude he is!” Zhang Liang thought. “But he's an elderly man. I should respect(尊敬) and help him.” He got the shoe and put it on the old man's foot. “This young man is worth teaching,” the old man said to himself. “Come back five days later. Meet me here on the bridge. Come early!” the old man said to Zhang Liang.
Five days later, Zhang Liang went to the bridge. The old man was already there. “You've kept me waiting!” the old man shouted. “Come back five days later!” This time, Zhang Liang woke up as the sun rose. He rushed to the bridge. Again, he found the old man was already there. He had to come another five days later.
Five days later, Zhang Liang rushed to the bridge after midnight. This time, he made it. When the old man arrived, he nodded and handed a book to Zhang Liang. “If you read this book carefully, you can become a strategist(战略家),” he told Zhang Liang.
Zhang Liang studied the book carefully. Years later, he became a strategist and helped Liu Bang overthrow(推翻) the Qin Dynasty and become the first emperor of the Han Dynasty.
