There are 24 Solar Terms in China. The Minor Snow(小雪), the 20th Solar Term of the year, begins on November 22 this year. Here are a few things you should know about the Minor Snow.
Wearing hats and scarves
In China, with the arrival of the Minor Snow, the wind blows from the northeast a lot. Many people do not wear hats or scarves. In fact, according to an old Chinese saying, “The head is the place where all passages of the body gather. ” It's necessary(必要的) to wear hats and scarves to keep one's head warm.
Having hot soup
During the Minor Snow, the air in the houses is dry and most people may find their nose and mouth feel a bit dry. This will cause(导致) “inner heat” in one's body. The key is to have more hot soup.
Eating rice cakes
In some areas of South China, people eat rice cakes around the Minor Snow. In ancient times, rice cakes were a traditional festival offering(祭品) to the bull god(牛神).
Making pickled(腌制的) vegetables and pork
After the Minor Snow, because of the low temperature and dry air, it is the best time to start making preserved pork(腊肉), which by the Chinese New Year would be ready to enjoy. The people in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province, have welcomed the Minor Snow by making pickled vegetables.
In addition(此外), we like to eat spicy(辛辣的) food to keep warm. However, it's not wise to eat much spicy food because that will increase “inner heat”. This year's Minor Snow is coming. Wish you to be surrounded by a life full of warmth.
