Ⅴ.阅读理解
(2025·河北衡水中学高二月考)
When it comes to the most famous 20th-century painters of the United States,Grandma Moses should be mentioned, although she did not start painting until she was in her late seventies.
As she once said to herself: "I would never sit back in a rocking chair, waiting for someone to help me." No one could have had a more active old age.
She was a live-in housekeeper for a total of 15 years, starting at 12 years of age. After getting married, she and her husband farmed most of their lives. With no time in her difficult farming life for painting, she had to set aside her passion for it. At age 92 she wrote,"When I was quite small,my father would get me and my brothers pieces of white paper. He liked to see us draw pictures. It was a penny a sheet and lasted longer than candy. "It was her father’s encouragement that fed her passion for painting and this dream was able to manifest (清楚显示)itself later in her life.
Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery (刺绣) as a hobby, but only changed to oils in her old age because her hands became too stiff (僵硬的) to sew and she still wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought all that she painted. Moses’ works, which she called "old-timey" New England landscapes, are careful and lively portrayals of the country life. Moses said that she would "get an inspiration and start painting; then I’ll forget everything, everything except how things used to be and how to paint it so people will know how we used to live. "
1. What can we learn about Grandma Moses from Paragraph 1?
A. Her marriage life was not happy.
B. She painted in oils when she was a child.

D. She still led a colorful life when she was old.

3. What does the underlined word "portrayals" in the last paragraph mean?
