B
Zheng Qinwen, a rising tennis star in China, began playing tennis at age 7 and quickly became one of the best in her hometown, Shiyan. She travelled to Wuhan to display her skills and was offered a training spot there. Looking back on those days, Zheng, now 23, still cried in an interview because she had to stay away from her family. However, with her family renting an apartment in Wuhan and her grandparents taking care of her, she gradually adapted.
Zheng, who is ranked 23rd in women’s singles, has battled through four matches at the US Open and is getting better with each one. She shoulders the responsibility of being part of China’s tennis boom(繁荣), inspired by figures like Li Na, the retired Chinese tennis player who won two Grand Slam singles titles. Zheng trained in Wuhan and Beijing, and later caught the attention of Li’s agency(经纪人), leading to a move to Barcelona for advanced training. Her mother had been with her since she turned professional at 15 and Zheng has been steadily climbing the rankings.
Last spring, she hired Wim Fissette as her coach, who has worked with Grand Slam champions. Zheng struck him as a hard worker who was full of ambition. In Zheng he saw an athletic player, explosive but green. Be the one to dominate(主导)the game, he tells her, the champion is almost always the one who is dominating, not the one who is being defensive. Under Fissette’s guidance, Zheng is adopting an aggressive playing style.
Despite losing one-set leads twice in the tournament, Zheng knows why her mind focuses on the final result instead of the point she is about to play. Sometimes it takes losing a set to bring her back to the present.
Currently, Zheng is embracing the time without her parents, learning to make decisions for herself, confident and ready to continue her tennis journey on her own.
