B
Technology has made it easier than ever to keep watch on your kids. And over half of parents say they check their teen’s social media accounts. Celebrities aren’t immune to the temptation to spy either—baseball analyst Alex Rodriguez admitted he used a fake account to follow his daughters.
The reality is, your child’s activity can provide insights into whether or not they are experiencing issues—and social media use can even be a reason for them. Before teenagers get keys to a car, they need to receive driver’s education and pass a road test. They don’t usually receive the same education before getting a phone or social media access. So it’s a great idea to teach kids how to stay safe on social media and use it responsibly. But should you really be scrolling through your kid’s social feeds?
“What you need to do is monitor your children, rather than spy and invade their privacy,”says Gall Saltz, a clinical associate professor of psychiatry.“The former means checking about once per week rather than daily,”he adds.“You can use an app to follow teenagers on social media, or request passwords. But you should always be transparent with your child and avoid using fake accounts. You can say,‘I’m happy to rent you this phone that we are providing to you. With the terms of use, we are going to provide monitoring, just to make sure you are safe’,”suggests Dr Strohman, a clinical psychologist.
There can be lines with what a parent should monitor. Dr Saltz advises against looking at text messages, which are private conversations. On the other hand, there are also times when a parent can go further than promised. If a teen is exhibiting signs of a serious issue, parents may want to see previously off-limits digital activity like texts.“If you think your child might take his/her life or do something really dangerous, I say all bets are off.”says Dr Saltz.“But always make sure to talk to the child first before taking any other step.”
5. Why is Alex Rodriguez mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. Because the writer wants to introduce parents’inappropriate behaviour.
B. Because the writer wants to show parents’curiosity about their children’s daily life.
C. Because the writer wants to prove parents’spying on their children online is common.
D. Because the writer wants to stress parents can influence their children through the Internet.
6. What should parents do according to Dr Strohman?
A. Use their full names online.
B. Express their concern honestly to their children.
C. Have open and direct talks with their children online.
D. Keep themselves informed of what their children do online.
7. What does Gall Saltz probably mean by“all bets are off”in the last paragraph?
A. You have set a useless time limit.
B. Your child’s efforts are in vain.
C. You can break the previous promise.
D. No online activities are allowed.
8. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To help children use social media properly.
B. To urge children to protect their privacy online.
C. To teach parents how to stop their children going online.
D. To tell how parents should monitor their children online.
