春联是中国春节文化的重要象征。它不仅是一种文学艺术形式，更是一种文化传承的载体，书法艺术在春联中得到了充分展现。
Spring Festival Couplets are an important part of the Chinese New Year culture.
People write Spring Festival Couplets with black or golden characters(汉字) on red paper. They have a pair of lines pasted(粘贴) on each side of the front door. Pasting couplets shows people's happiness in the festival and wishes for a better life in the coming year.
In a pair of Spring Festival Couplets, the first line (upper scroll) and the second line (lower scroll) have the same number of characters, and their meanings are related and antithetical(相关对仗). The horizontal scroll is a four - character phrase. It covers the two lines' meanings.
Reading Spring Festival Couplets is interesting. Here is the way: First, look at the horizontal scroll. If the four characters are from left to right, the upper scroll will be on the left and the lower scroll on the right. If the characters of the horizontal scroll are reversed(相反的), we read them from right to left.
Spring Festival Couplets start from Taofu, some words on peach boards(木板), in the Zhou Dynasty. At that time, people believe that peach trees can stop bad things, so they put peach boards in front of the doors with words on them. During the Song Dynasty, the board is replaced(替代) by paper. The custom(习俗) becomes popular in the Ming Dynasty. The Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang finds those pairs of scrolls interesting, so he asks all households to paste the scrolls during the Chinese New Year. This tradition continues today.
