It can be difficult to tell how smart animals are—they can't answer questions. But scientists can give them tests to see what they can do.
Pigeons(鸽子) have lots of natural skills. They can read landscapes like a map. They can find their way home from places they've never been to. They can understand human faces, and follow hundreds of pigeon friends.
But can they count? Many animals can tell less from more, and keep following 3 or 4 objects. Pigeons can count much higher. They can learn to peck at groups of objects in counting order(the group with one first, then the group with two, etc. ), no matter what the objects are. This shows that they understand the idea of numbers.
Pigeons can also learn to peck at a button exactly 8, 17, or 24 times to get a treat. They can even remember their place if they get troubled, and keep going again where they left off.
Like all birds, pigeons have very sharp eyes. They can see more colors than humans. They can see a tasty sesame seed(芝麻籽) on the grassy ground.
Pigeons are also good at finding patterns(图案) and solving shape puzzles(谜). In games to match shapes, they are faster than humans. Some scientists are studying pigeon brains to help teach robots and computers how to see.
