Face - changing in Sichuan Opera
It is said that face - changing originated from the ancient people who drew different shapes on their faces to scare the fierce (凶猛的) animals for survival. Nowadays, face - changing is a unique stunt (特技) included in Sichuan Opera that is used to express the changing emotions of characters.
Face - changing is not simply changing one's facial make - up in a casual way. It refers to the changing of masks in quick succession (连续不断) in the opera. The performers are like magicians!
Different mask colours represent different things. From green to blue, from black to dark red and white the audience can see anger, slyness (狡猾), fear and many more represented in action.
The techniques adopted (采取) in face - changing roughly fall into three categories: smearing (抹暴眼), blowing (吹粉) and peeling (扯脸).
Smearing is to smear the coloured paints on certain parts of the face and during the performance the actor would smear the paints to turn his face into another colour. The paints can be smeared either on the actor's forehead and eyebrows to change the entire face or on his cheeks and nose to change the lower half of the face. The paints can be smeared only on a specific part to change that part.
Blowing can only apply to powders (粉末), like gold, black and silver powders. A small object is placed on the stage with powders in it and during the performance the actor would dance to throw his face close to the object and blow the powders, which will adhere (黏附) to the actor's oiled face quickly and change it to another colour. The actor must pay attention to closing his eyes and mouth and holding his breath when blowing.
Peeling is a relatively difficult way. The actors are required to draw the facial masks on pieces of silk in advance, cut them and tie a handful of silk thread to each mask before pasting (粘贴) them to the actor's face. The silk thread is tied to the actor's costume like his belt, which is easy to operate but not eye - catching. During the performance, the masks will be peeled one by one under the cover of dancing.
All in all, face - changing is a very unique achievement of Sichuan Opera, which has been adopted in many other Chinese operas and even spread abroad.
