On her first night under the desert sky, Robyn had two big worries: first, losing the camels, and second, scorpions, which are small insects with a painful and dangerous bite. Fortunately, when she woke up next morning, the camels were still there and she had not been bitten by a scorpion. In fact, the main danger was from wild bull camels. “Shoot first, and ask questions later!” Sallay had told her. This was why Robyn carried the rifle, though she hoped she would never have to use it.

It was a strange group that walked off into the desert. First came Robyn riding Bub, and then came Zelly and Dookie, and finally, some metres behind, Zelly’s new baby, Goliath. Diggity could be anywhere, as she usually liked to run around looking for wild rabbits. Sometimes they were lucky enough to catch a rabbit for dinner. If not, Robyn ate rice and vegetables.

She was planning to walk about thirty-two kilometres a day, six days a week, for between six and eight months, so the food she ate was very important. She had learnt about wild plants from her Aboriginal friends in Alice Springs. She knew which ones were good to eat, and as a result she became very healthy and strong.
