Football — A world game
Football is a game involving two teams of 11 players who try to move the ball into the other team's goal without using their hands or arms, except for one goalkeeper (守门员) in each team. The team that scores more goals wins. Football is one of the world's most popular ball games in numbers of participants and spectators (观看者).
Modern football originated in Britain in the 19th century. Though "folk football" had been played since medieval (中世纪的) times with varied rules, the game began to be standardised when it was taken up as a winter game at public schools. The Football Association, formed in 1863, made the rules of the game and hosted the first cup competition between regional football clubs in Britain.
The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) estimated that at the turn of the 21st century there were approximately 250 million football players worldwide.
It's not easy to tell what makes football so popular. But one reason is how simple the sport is. Football needs only two feet and a ball. This makes it a sport that both developed and developing countries can easily play. Besides, the beautiful dance-like movements on the field are pleasing to the eye. What's more, football excites the heart because the sport itself brings people together for one purpose: to win. When the team wins, fans feel the same excitement as the players.
