Suddenly a very loud noise made Arlene jump. It was the noise of an avalanche coming down from near the summit of Annapurna. It was before breakfast on the second morning at Base Camp, and Arlene had walked a little way up towards the mountain. Now she was sitting looking down at the tents below. She needed to be alone to think about the climb. She wanted to plan how to get to the top of this mountain. When she heard the avalanche, she again remembered her friend who had died, and she felt very afraid.

On most mountains, avalanches are unusual very early in the morning. On Annapurna, avalanches could happen at any time of the night or day. It was almost impossible to avoid them. Arlene knew that, if they were caught by an avalanche, someone could be killed. Fortunately, this avalanche was too far away from Base Camp to worry the climbers. But perhaps they would not always be so lucky.

Arlene now had to put these worries out of her head, because the really serious work of climbing the mountain was just beginning. Each camp would have a tent and some food. The women would walk between the camps in small teams of two or three, carrying food and equipment. The “summit team” of two or three women would start from Camp 5. This was the safest way of climbing Annapurna. If there was a storm and conditions became too difficult, climbers could come down to a lower camp to find tents and food.

For the next two weeks they could carry food and equipment up the mountain to prepare for this dangerous climb above Camp 2. Lopsang helped Arlene to plan the climb carefully. They had to reach the summit during a break between the monsoons and the really bad winter weather, when climbing high would become impossible.
