B(2025·常州市联盟学校期中联考改编)
Born into a family struggling with financial problems, Arshad Nadeem’s childhood was far removed from the charming world of sports. His father, a mason(泥瓦匠), worked tirelessly to provide for his family, while young Nadeem displayed an early love for sports, particularly cricket. However, destiny(命运之神) had a different plan.
It was during his early years that Nadeem’s talent for the javelin(标枪运动) was recognized by his coach Rashid Ahmad Saqi. With limited resources and training facilities, the path ahead was filled with challenges. Yet, Nadeem’s determination was strong. He accepted the hardships, transforming them into stepping stones towards his final goal.
Nadeem’s training was anything but usual. Lacking access to world-class facilities, he often used self-made equipment and practiced in open fields. He pushed his physical limits, carrying out very tiring workouts in the burning sun.
The journey was filled with failures and disappointments. Injuries, financial limitations, and the lack of proper equipment tested his determination. However, Nadeem’s toughness shone through. He refused to be discouraged, drawing strength from his ordinary beginnings and the solid support of his family and coach.
Nadeem explained that he’d always remained faithful to his ability to throw over 90 meters.
“People have seen me throw long distances, and I have also heard chatter that I could go close to 100 meters. But I don’t want to appear too ambitious. If I cross 90 meters once, my next attempt will be to touch 92 meters,” he said. “From the beginning, I just tell myself to keep a simple approach, make small changes and hope for the best, and it has worked out for me.”
His success at the Paris Olympic Games wasn’t a given either; Nadeem secured gold at the Commonwealth Games three years ago with a throw of 90.18 meters, but his form had cooled since that summer. He’s also undergone more than one operation in recent years as his dream for Olympic gold was threatened by injury.

C(2025·湖北部分名校期中联考)
高考趋势性主题 优秀品质·身残志坚
When a colleague sent John McFall a job advertisement for would-be astronauts, his reaction was swift.
All he had in his head was that it would be awesome to go to space. However, doing so would involve breaking through a glass ceiling—one that has held firm for more than six decades of space exploration.
After losing his right leg at the age of 19 in a motorcycle accident, McFall went on to become a Paralympic athlete, winning bronze in Beijing, and later becoming a surgeon. In 2022, the European Space Agency (ESA) announced that he would join them in seeking to push the boundaries of space exploration after a demanding selection process. Three years after spotting the job posting by ESA, McFall is now on track to become the world’s first astronaut with a disability.
There’s no guarantee that McFall will go into space. But the agency has been putting him through the requirements of a six-month mission to the International Space Station. The tests are aimed at exploring questions such as how McFall would move and stabilize himself in microgravity and how conditions in space would affect his prosthesis(假肢). So far, all signs have suggested that space flight is feasible for McFall, giving hope that he—or someone with a similar disability—could eventually train for an upcoming mission.
Since starting with the ESA, he has sought to gently push back against the widely used title of “parastronaut”. “I’m not a parasurgeon; I’m a surgeon. I’m not a parad; I’m a dad,” he said, describing it as a “slippery slope” to add “para” in front of anything done by someone with a physical disability.
McFall is hoping to challenge people’s perception of what an astronaut looks like. He said, “My job is to make sure that people have a well-rounded and informed definition of disability and what being disabled means.”
(
C
) 8. Why does going to space involve breaking through a glass ceiling?
A. Because McFall feels it awful to go to space.
B. Because McFall has to pass a glass breaking test.
C. Because there has been no disabled astronaut to date.
D. Because the boundaries of space exploration are easy to push.
(
D
) 9. What have the signs indicated so far?
A. The tests are unfair and inhuman.
B. McFall will definitely go to space.
C. McFall’s hope for the future is lost.
D. Space flight is workable for McFall.
(
C
) 10. What does McFall want to do according to the last two paragraphs?
A. Join hands with the disabled.
B. Push people to slip over on a slope.
C. Deepen people’s understanding of disability.
D. Protest strongly against the use of “parastronaut”.
(
B
) 11. Which of the following can best describe John McFall?
A. Generous but strict.
B. Courageous and inspiring.
C. Ambitious and talented.
D. Warm-hearted and outgoing.
答案: C[语篇解读]本文是一篇记叙文。文章介绍了John McFall作为一个残疾人取得了非凡成就的故事。
8.C 推理判断题。根据第一段中的“However,doing so would...space exploration.”和第二段中的“McFall is now on track...a disability”可知,在太空探索领域还没有残疾宇航员,所以McFall如果成为宇航员,将打破这一无形的限制。
9.D 细节理解题。根据第三段最后一句“So far,all signs...mission.”
