B(2024.洛阳市实验中学期末考试)
Last year,I was asked to go to Lesotho as a volunteer teacher. It's a small count r ry completely
surrounded by old, grass−covered mountains. The winters are so cold and dry that young trees don't survive
unless they are near a spring or a river.
So when I met Wilfred, who was traveling to his home with a load of trees to plant,I couldn't help but
go and see what he would do with them.I made a two−hour hike one winter morning and was amazed by what
I saw:There were lots of trees, expanding from where I was standing almost to the top of the mountain.
I carried on and reached Wilfred's home at the back of the mountain. As I talked to him,I was deeply
impressed by Wilfred's passion for his planting business. He had started planting trees 20 years before, often
collecting peach pits(桃核)and growing trees from them.In times of drought, although he was in his
sixties,he carried water from a small stream to his trees.
At first, people around him were suspicious and jealous(妒忌的).Several times, people came and pulled
out the trees he had planted ; they didn ’ t want him to have anything that they didn't have.Wilfred then found
a way to deal with the troublemakers:He gave his trees away freely to his neighbors.
Over the past 20 years,Wilfred had organized tree−planting days at the primary school where he worked
and showed people how they could make tree−growing profitable by selling fruit and firewood.Soon,
everyone was grow.ing trees.
As I lef ft,he told me that before he died,he hoped to see the valley(l 山谷)around his home covered, for
the first time, with trees.Till now,I think of Wilfred's dream from time to time. The ordinary primary
school teacher lights up our hope for a greener planet.

Our clothes do alot for us.They keep us warm in winter or cool while we'reworking out. They let us
dress to impress or comfortably relax on the couch. But some researchers think our clothes could be doing
even more. Those scientists and engineers are dreaming up new ways to make clot the s safer r,more

harmful mixtures. It could offer people in war−torn countries prot tec t tion.
