During World War II, British and American soldiers worked together to plan battles. Though they both spoke English, some words meant very different things in each country!
One day, British officers wrote an important army plan and told their American team they wanted to "table it". To the British, this meant "Let's discuss it right now!"
But the Americans looked confused. "Why would we ignore such an important plan?" they asked anxiously.
"No, we need to discuss it now!" the British replied firmly.
They argued back and forth, growing more and more frustrated. Finally, after a heated exchange, a British officer asked, "What exactly do you think 'table it' means?" An American answered, "It means to put it away in a drawer and forget it!"
"Oh dear!" laughed the British officer. "We mean to talk about it now!" Both sides burst into laughter as they finally understood they referred to the same thing!
