一、阅读理解
The NBA’s latest season started in October. If you watch the games, you may often hear the names of NBA teams, like the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Los Angeles Lakers. But do you know the stories behind those names?
All NBA teams have an interesting story or a history behind their names. Some of the names tell us the city’s culture or history. The Denver Nuggets is one example of this. In the 1800s, thousands of people across the United States flooded into Denver to hopefully find some gold. The team’s name is fitting to it.
Other teams are named for industries (工业) or events that their hometown is well - known for. For example, the Indianapolis 500 is a famous auto race. It takes place in Indiana’s capital of Indianapolis. A “pace car” is a car that leads the racers at the start of the race and helps them warm up. Therefore, it was easy to choose “Pacers” for the name of Indiana’s NBA team.
Still other teams have their names from their hometown’s wildlife. For example, the Minnesota Timberwolves is named after an animal that is widely found across Minnesota: the timberwolf.
So as you can see, the stories behind team names can be quite amazing. If you do some research online, you can find out the story behind your favourite team’s name on your own.
