Chinese sci-fi film *The Wandering Earth* is said to have earned about 1.4 billion yuan in box office sales over its first five days on the big screen.
The film, one of the biggest winners on the Spring Festival film market, also received favourable reviews from audience and critics, both at home and abroad.
In the film, mankind is threatened (威胁) by the dying Sun. In order to survive, the United Earth Government installs about 10,000 giant engines on Earth to help it fly away to a new sun — Alpha Centauri (半人马座阿尔法星), which is about 4.2 light years away. Yet, as Earth gets closer to Jupiter (木星), its huge gravitational force (引力) captures Earth and Earth may be torn apart (撕碎) within days. A Chinese astronaut and his son step out, joining in a global mission to save the world.
The film is based on a novel written by Liu Cixin, one of China's most famous science - fiction writers. He won the top science fiction prize, Hugo Award, in 2015, for his novel *The Three-Body Problem*. Liu Cixin praised the film as the "beginning of a new journey" for the Chinese sci-fi film industry.
