School bus yellow is a colour that was used on school buses in North America in 1939. The colour is now known in Canada and the USA as National School Bus Glossy Yellow and was called National School Bus Chrome.
The colour was chosen because it attracts attention and is noticed more easily than any other colour. Scientists describe this as follows: “Lateral peripheral vision (外侧周边视觉) for finding yellow is 1.24 times greater than for red.”
In April 1939, Dr Frank W. Cyr, a professor at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York, organized a conference that set up national school bus standards for the USA, including the standard colour of yellow for the school bus. It became known as “National School Bus Chrome”. The colour was chosen because black words on that were easiest to see in the darkness of early morning.
In Sweden, yellow buses were used as postbuses by the Swedish Postal Service in the areas where there were few people from 1923 to 1991, since before “school bus yellow” was created in 1939, with the colour chosen because it was the traditional colour of the Swedish Postal Service, and as such was the colour used on both post boxes and vehicles. Other national postal services in Europe, including in Germany and Switzerland, also used yellow buses for the same reason, since long before, 1939, and some still do.
School bus yellow is also the traditional colour of coaches and buses between cities in Hungary. North American-style yellow school buses are being introduced in some parts of the United Kingdom. A similar shade of yellow was used in Santiago, Chile’s bus lines between 1992 and 2007.
