二、阅读理解。
A
A young man went to the boss of cutting trees and asked for a job. “That depends,” replied the boss. “Let me see you cut this tree down.” The young man stepped forward, and skillfully cut a great tree down. The boss was amazed and said, “You can start on Monday.”
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday went by, and Thursday afternoon the boss went to the young man and said, “You can pick up your wages(薪水) on the way out today.” The young man was very surprised. He replied, “I thought you would pay on Friday.”
“Usually we do,” said the boss. “But I’m letting you go today because you’ve fallen behind. Our daily charts(日程表) show that you’ve dropped from first place on Monday to last place today.”
“But I’m quite hard-working,” the young man argued. “I am the first to arrive, and the last to leave, and even work during my coffee breaks!”
The boss thought for a minute and then asked, “Have you sharpened your axe(斧子)?” “Sharpened? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut more trees,” replied the young man.
The moral of this story: while John was working hard, he didn’t think about how to do his job better. Our lives are like that. We sometimes get so busy that we don’t take time out to “sharpen the axe”. Many of us never learn new skills. We think that whatever we have learned is enough. There’s nothing wrong with hard work. However, in some ways, sharpening our skills from time to time is the key to success.
