阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
When we think of the Olympics, a few things come to mind immediately: the athletes marching into the stadium during the opening ceremonies; the gold, silver, and bronze medals given to winners of the events; the torch and other memorable Olympic moments; and, of course, the Olympic rings. The Olympic symbol — widely known throughout the world as the Olympic rings — is the visual ambassador (大使) of Olympism for billions of people.
The 1912 Olympic Games held in Stockholm, Sweden, were the first to include athletes from the five continents. In 1913, Pierre de Coubertin designed the Olympic rings, which soon became the symbol of the Olympic Games.
Humans have long used rings or circles as symbols, but in the case of the Olympic rings, they have special meaning. For instance, the five rings represent the five continents that participated in the 1912 Olympic Games. Additionally, the Olympic rings are made of five rings of equal size, from left to right, blue, yellow, black, green and red, representing the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes from all over the world. Lastly, in the words of Coubertin: “These five rings represent the five parts of the world now won over to the cause of Olympism and ready to accept its fecund rivalries (竞争).”
Given what we know about colours and their symbolic meanings, it seems that each colour featured in the Olympic rings would stand for something specific, like a continent. But in reality, that’s not the case at all. Coubertin chose the six colours — blue, yellow, black, green, red, and white (featured in the background) — because when he introduced the symbol in 1913, these six colours could be combined to represent all national colours. Or, in his own words: “The six colours thus combined reproduce those of all nations without exception.”
