Ⅰ. 阅读理解
Blue whales are the largest animals on earth. They are also the largest animals that have ever lived. This means that they are bigger than dinosaurs.
Blue whales eat mostly small shrimplike creatures called krill (磷虾). A single adult blue whale is so big that it needs to eat about four tons of krill a day. Blue whales spend their summers in polar waters eating large amounts of krill, and afterwards, they migrate to the equator (赤道) to spend the winter.
Unlike other types of whales that live in groups known as pods (一群),blue whales usually live alone or in pairs. They make a variety of sounds underwater,by which scientists believe they communicate with each other. Scientists also believe some of these sounds act like sonar helping the whales map their ocean environment. In good conditions, some of the sounds they make can be heard up to about 1,600 kilometres away.
In the past, blue whales were extremely abundant and found swimming in all of the major oceans of the world. However,it is estimated that there are now only between 10,000 and 25,000 blue whales left in existence. Because of their large size and supply of blubber (鲸脂),blue whales were a popular species to hunt. Whalers would sell their blubber and body parts to suppliers who made various materials out of them.
Blue whales face other threats from humans in their ocean environment now. Ships sometimes strike whales and injure them. In addition, they produce ocean noise that makes it hard for whales to communicate. Ocean pollution and fishing are other dangers blue whales are facing. Sometimes, blue whales become tangled and trapped in fishing nets.
Blue whales are important to the world because they play a key role in the marine food chain. However,in some places they are still killed illegally. More strong measures must be taken to protect them. What are your thoughts on whaling?
