The Qinghai-Tibet Railway, with the world's highest altitude, has had a minimal ecological impact on the plateau (高原) since its opening in 2006, according to a news report.
The surrounding environment of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is quite sensitive and can easily be harmed, for the vegetation there is hard to recover shortly after destruction, which is also the source of some rivers, as well as the habitat for many national rare species such as the Tibetan antelope (藏羚羊) and the snow leopard (雪豹).
The Qinghai-Tibet Railway Company has put much effort into carrying out the "green sky road" construction project over years. The surrounding green belt forms "a green corridor (通道)".
"The Qinghai-Tibet Railway has provided a lot of experience for us to draw on for the construction and operation of future railway projects," said an employee of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway Company.
The company has set up plants for sewage (污水) treatment and plenty of closed bins in every railway station; meanwhile, it equips every train with the advanced compressed (压缩的) garbage collection system and sewage collection system, aiming to realise the goal of "zero pollution, zero release and green operation" both on the ground and trains.
"By measures such as 'giving way to animals', our nature reserve has seen a sharp increase in the number of Tibetan antelopes," said a director of the Management Bureau of Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve.
Every effort made by the Qinghai-Tibet Railway Company has achieved the desired effects. With a total length of 1,956 kilometres, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway extends from Xining, capital of Qinghai Province, to Lhasa, capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region in China. It has been one of the world's highest and longest railways on the plateau at present. The railway has led to a boom in tourism in Tibet.

1. Why is the Qinghai-Tibet Railway a green railway? What efforts has the Qinghai-Tibet Railway Company made?
2. Do you know any other similar engineering wonders? Introduce one to the class.

2. Do you know any other similar engineering wonders? Introduce one to the class.
答案:
1. It is a green railway because it has had minimal ecological impact on the plateau and achieved "zero pollution, zero release and green operation". The efforts include carrying out the "green sky road" construction project to form a green corridor, setting up sewage treatment plants and closed bins in every railway station, equipping every train with advanced compressed garbage collection and sewage collection systems, and taking measures such as "giving way to animals". 2. Another similar engineering wonder is the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. It connects Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao. During its construction, many environmental protection measures were taken, such as setting up dolphin channels to protect marine ecology and reduce the impact on marine life.
