According to a recently released measure(措施) to strengthen physical education in schools, primary and middle school students in Shenzhen had daily physical education(PE) classes from Jan. 1, 2024. As part of the measure, these schools made sure no less than 30 minutes for sports activities throughout the day.
Buxin Primary School in Luohu District started using a “3 + 1 + 1” model, which included three regular PE classes, one music-based exercise class, and one sports game class to make sure a total of five PE classes per week.
Because there weren't enough PE teachers to teach all the new classes, the school had to ask teachers from other subject areas to lead many of the PE classes. Liu Xunhua, a Chinese teacher, took on the role of a PE teacher. Liu led students in jumping rope and jumping jacks. “Everything is for students' health, and we support the new measure,” said Liu. Like other non-professional(非专业的) PE teachers, Liu took PE training classes and found chances to learn from professional PE teachers.
However, there are still many issues to be solved. A key problem faced by many schools is the limited(有限的) space for new PE classes. In Longhua Foreign Languages School, for example, if there are too many PE classes at the same time, teachers have to take students to the park opposite the school.
Chen Xinru, a Grade 8 student from Xin'an Middle School, said that a daily PE class can improve their learning abilities. “When I am tired, I can relax myself by running or playing basketball and I can become more focused in class,” said Chen. Luo Xing, a PE teacher from the same school, said that the daily PE class is a good thing for students' physical and mental health.
