Ida Keeling grew up in a poor family in Harlem, working in factories for her whole life. Life wasn't easy for her. She lost her husband early, and two of her four children died in accidents. She was very sad and her health began to get worse day by day.
Keeling's daughter is a sports player. To help her mother out of her dark cloud, she asked her mother to take up running, not just slow running around the neighbourhood, but professional running. At the time, Ida Keeling was 67.
Keeling hadn't done any running for many years. Why did she decide to do such a great thing? She really wanted to do something new so she decided to give it a try. She would later recall that her first running was wonderful. "I just forgot all my bad things," she said. Although it was hard at first, Keeling didn't give up. Running needs great endurance(耐力). And over time, her skills got better, so running became less difficult for her. She went on breaking records(记录) in the 60-metre running race in the 95—99 age group and set a record in the 100 metres for runners over 100 years old. "No one believed I could," she said. "I was just exercising and now I'm famous all over the world."
When she's not running, she's working out. She goes to the gym for exercise three to four days a week, such as running, dancing and bike riding. She even finds ways to exercise while cooking. She wrote a book about her life story. She believes that every day is another day.
