Reading opens a world of possibilities. From books about self-improvement to DIY home repairs, books can make a big difference. But for people who don’t even have enough food, going to a bookstore or a library seems difficult. That’s why an organization in Britain is now serving books at food banks.
The organization, called Bookbanks, was started by Emily Rhodes, a writer from London. In 2022, Emily began volunteering at a community food center in Newington Green. There she realized that reading could not only improve people’s lives but could also help people make connections and socialize(社交).
Emily started small by setting up a table with a few hundred books at the food bank in Newington Green. At first, Emily gave books from her own collection but as her project grew she started to get donations(捐赠) from bookstores, libraries, and publishers(出版商).
Yusuf, 53, a food bank user, said that he takes books to read with his son. “It’s the best time; we are quiet together...If you haven’t got money, but you have a book, the book is knowledge(知识) and knowledge is good.”
Now, there are four Bookbanks locations and more than 3,000 books have been given away. There are plans to open four to six more Bookbanks locations in 2025. Bringing books into the food banks shows that they may become a community space of socializing and learning and not just a place to be fed.
