Parrots are social animals. They usually live happily with other birds in the wild. However, the parrots that live as pets are often bored. A study made by scientists in April 2023 showed that they have found a new way to help alleviate(缓解) the birds’ loneliness.

The Northeastern University-led study included 18 pet parrots. The scientists taught the smart birds how to use video call apps first. They then spent two weeks introducing each parrot to two or three “friends” that were chosen according to their size and their voice. Once the training was completed, the scientists let the birds decide when they wanted to make a call.
To start a call, the parrots would first ring(敲) a bell. This let their owners know that they wanted a smartphone. The pets would then use their mouth to knock on the photo of the bird they wished to talk to. Each parrot could call up to two friends daily and “talk” to them for about five minutes each.
The researchers said that during the three-month-long study, the clever birds made several calls and were pretty delighted to see their new friends. “ Some would sing, some would play around and go upside down, others would want to show another bird their toys,” said the scientist Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas.
More interestingly, many parrots chose to call the same birds again and again. Jennifer Cunha, a parrot expert said her bird Ellie is still friends with Cookie, a grey parrot in California. “It’s been over a year, and they still talk,” she added.
