Haley and Claire stepped outside of the house to go over to the city center when they saw their family cat, Clifford, sniffing(嗅) a dead bird on the ground. The bird was yellow and green and about 15 cm from head to tail. It was lying near the glass door. Claire shouted, "Mom, the cat killed a bird."

Haley took a careful look at the dead bird. "Claire, if Clifford killed it, why aren't there any bite marks or blood on the bird?" Haley asked. Haley tried to understand what might have happened. "Haley, you can't always see bite marks or blood on a bird because of all the feathers(羽毛). Clifford usually doesn't take a lot of interest in hunting birds, but maybe he was hungry," answered Claire.
Haley stood up for a moment as she continued to think. Finally she said, "I know what happened! Clifford is not the killer! Claire, do you remember the mysterious knock earlier this morning? You went to see who was at the door, but no one was there. I think this bird tried to fly through the glass door and broke its neck when it hit the glass."
"Wow, you are amazing, but how did you know that?" asked Claire.
"I was sitting in the living room about a year ago when a bird hit the front window. It made quite a noise and I found the bird standing on the ground. It was knocked down and couldn't fly for a few moments, but at last it was able to fly away. I don't think this bird was as lucky as that one," explained Haley.
1 What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?
A. There was blood and feathers on the floor.
B. The bird was dying when Haley and Claire found it.
C. Claire believed that Clifford is interested in hunting birds.
D. Claire and Haley had different opinions about the bird's death.
2 What does the underlined word "mysterious" mean in the text?
A. Strange.
B. Light.
C. Exact.
D. Careful.
3 Who killed the bird according to Haley?
A. Clifford.
B. Claire.
C. The bird itself.
D. She and Claire's mother.
4 What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. Why Claire disagreed with her sister.
B. Why Haley thought this bird was so lucky.
C. How the birds flew through the glass door.
D. How Haley inferred the cause of the bird's death.
